My military career
An officer ...
The training part of my military world began in 1972, when I reported to the Royal Military Academy in Breda, the Netherlands. I became an infantry platoon commander upon completion of the Academy in 1976 and from then on, the Military has taken me through a whole series of appointments and postings, which are summarised in my resume.
But in (very) short, it looked like this ....
My infantry tour of duty started with the 13 Armored Infantry Battalion (the “Prinses Irene” Fusilier Guards Regiment) in various “field” assignments before becoming Company Commander of an Armored Infantry Company in 1979.
My “international career” had SHAPE as a starting point, where I worked (Long Term) Defense Planning Issues in the Policy & Requirements Division from June 1991 to June 1994.
In 1994 I re-joined the national ranks in becoming the first Course Director of the Advanced Military Studies Course (HMV) at the Netherlands Defense College in Rijswijk.
My second international posting followed in June 1997, when I joined the Striking Fleet Atlantic in Norfolk, Virginia (USA), as the first foreign Army officer to have ever served on this staff.
In June 2000, I was promoted to Colonel while at the same time being appointed as Regional Military Commander North, commanding the 3 most Northern provinces of the Netherlands.
In January 2004, I was transferred to the newly established Operational Command as Chief Plans & Programs. Operational Command, as a military organization, was short lived and transferred into the Army Command as of 2005. In this transition phase, I initially served as (acting) Director, Operational Support Directorate for almost 1 year. After that I was appointed as Deputy Director of the Operations Directorate.
2007 started with my appointment as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations at 1st German/Netherlands Corps in Muenster, Germany. This was also my final military posting and I retired on 1 August 2009 from active military duty; after some 37 years this part of my life had ended.
This is where my military career started, the Royal Military Academy in Breda, The Netherlands.
And this is a picture of the good ship USS Mount Whitney, where I worked during my posting with the Striking Fleet Atlantic.
